Not the best boke mount

Review by sbrhkc, 2010-08-17

Doesn't mount tight to handle bars with the zip ties making the mount move. Also, the 4 prongs that snap into the bike mount will break. Only lasted about 8 months.

Be careful when you remove the cradle from the mount

Review by musical chemist, 2010-08-08

I bought this a few months ago and have used it several times on long road rides. It's been working great for me for the most part. It has two main parts: a smaller mount piece which uses zip ties to attach to the handlebar or stem, and a larger cradle piece that holds the GPS. The cradle goes into the mount using the RAM mechanism, which is spring loaded and has plastic pins. The spring is very strong. If you're not careful when removing the cradle from the mount, some of the plastic pins can break. Why remove the cradle, you ask? In case you have a flat tire and need to turn the bike upside-down and don't want to cut off the zip ties. After one pin broke, the pin on the opposite side also broke, probably due to uneven stress when the GPS was bouncing back and forth while riding (there are four pins total). So now I'm buying a replacement mount because there's not really any other alternative to carrying the GPS on a bike besides putting it in a back pack. Good thing it's not terribly expensive.

The key to not breaking the plastic pins is to avoid rocking the cradle back and forth, ever. But it's kind of hard to avoid doing that when removing the cradle because you have to line up the pins with the holes in the mount. I think the bottom piece of the cradle that screws on to the part that holds the GPS should me made of metal, not plastic.

Dissapointed

The mechanism by which this mount attaches to your handlebars is TWO ZIP TIES!!!! Give me a break!

Works great for cycle caching

Review by Dr. C, 2010-07-24

I bought this for my new PN-60. I guess it used to attaching using screws and a clamp, but now it uses zip-ties so it should attach to just about any diameter handlebar.

The GPSr is held tight in the bracket. So tight in fact that you'll want to remove the lanyard before you put it in. The bracket is easily removed with a simple twist, but it stayed in place even over rough roads.

It works great for me when I go out cycle caching. The PN-60 will even calculate a road route to the cache!

A Mount for all Ages

Review by Mr. Bigglesworth, 2010-07-22

I do like this bicycle mount.

It has held the GPS securely during my first 5 or so outings with it and I expect that will continue. The GPS snaps in and out of the mount completely - there is no part of the mount still attached to the GPS when I detach it from the bike, which I like. The snap-in/out process is easy enough once you get used to it. I initially though that the top 'clamp' of the mount might have trouble with the lanyard at the top of the DeLorme, but that is not the case. The 'holder' does not interfere with the display or the operation of the buttons - obviously good points.

The installation process is not as simple as I expected. The instructions could be improved with more/better pictures. My handlebars are much thinner than what the handlebar clamp will support, so this required that I wrap the handlebars with electrical tape to make up the gap (per the instructions). I also had to remove the handlebar grip and brake/shifter assembly from one side to get the clamp onto the handlebar. A two-piece clamp would have solved this, but now that's it's on, I expect that the one-piece design will prove less troublesome.

Overall a good product - you'll enjoy using it more than installing it.
